Capability

  • Has the intimate local knowledge of UK waste disposal conditions which are essential to success. The greatest risk to Biogas technology success is not the digestion technology; it is the effective use of energy and digestate, collection systems, public co-operation and planning issues which are dependent on local knowledge. UK Statutory issues are complex and different from Europe.
  • With City University, London has, in 2002, completed a unique year-long study for the Greater London Authority into all aspects of Biogas Plant in the urban setting. The study was based on working Biogas systems in Europe and the UK, including financial projections and proposals for plant in the London area.
  • David Collins is Biodigestion Advisor at the Renewable Energ Association and is currently managing an REA Project to develop a Standard for Scotland for the use of biofertiliser on farmland. The Project includes Vicky Heslop, Chair of the Irish Bio-energy Assocation and Prof. Stephen Nortcliff of the Soil Science Department of Reading University.   It is planned to extend the work to England and Wales in 2006/7.

Brief Biography

David Collins MSc FRGS -
Gained his MSc with Distinction in Energy Technology and Economics at City University, London and specialised in Anaerobic Digestion of municipal biowaste, carrying out a major investigation for the Greater London Authority in 2001. He has been in the Renewable Energy Industry since 1994. He also has many years industrial engineering experience gained while working as a Drilling Engineer offshore in the North Sea and overseas. His management, organisational and creative skills were developed when, for 10 years, he founded and ran a successful company Collins Associates, which had a turnover of £3m with bases in UK and Vietnam. In 1994 the company was taken over by a major shipping company. David gained a valuable foundation for his subsequent industrial career when he graduated as a Royal Marines Commando Officer in 1970 serving until 1977 in many parts of world in situations demanding resourcefulness, organisational and planning ability, energy and leadership skills.
